OpenAI will shut down gpt-3.5-turbo-instruct, gpt-3.5-turbo-1106, babbage-002 and davinci-002 on September 28, 2026; the replacement is gpt-5.6-terra.
What changes
Announced September 26, 2025 as part of a batch of legacy GPT model snapshots. OpenAI's deprecations page lists a 2026-09-28 shutdown for gpt-3.5-turbo-instruct, babbage-002, davinci-002 and gpt-3.5-turbo-1106, with gpt-5.6-terra as the recommended replacement for all four. Fine-tuned babbage-002 and davinci-002 models are listed separately, with a later shutdown date of October 23, 2026.
Breaking: Calls fail after this date.
What to do
Switch to gpt-5.6-terra before September 28 and re-run your evals. Fine-tunes built on babbage-002 or davinci-002 (ft:babbage-002:…, ft:davinci-002:…) aren't affected by this date; they're covered by the October 23, 2026 record.
